News
Coming to the United States for the first time as a university student or young professional can feel daunting, especially if that first time is for an internship or traineeship opportunity that will last for several months or even over a year. The possibilities seem endless, and the opportunity to build your resume seems like once in a lifetime, but the unknown is intimidating. Cultural Vistas knows this. The last thing we want is for an excited student with a fantastic opportunity to give up that opportunity because of fear.
Cultural Vistas is designated by the US Department of State to provide sponsorship to J-1 Interns and Trainees (among other categories), but what does that mean? It means that we are responsible for screening potential exchange visitors and their host companies, ensuring their program compliance and welfare, and monitoring their activities throughout their stay in the United States. Built into that is our desire to ensure that programs are successful: training plans are structured, supervised, and progressively challenging; exchange visitors build real-world skills; and opportunities for meaningful cultural exchange are abundant.
To ensure this, Cultural Vistas maintains policies and procedures backed by both the U.S. Federal Regulations that govern the Exchange Visitors Programs as well as our 60+ year history of administering the program. Additionally, our fees are entirely transparent. All of our costs and fees as well as our refund policy are publicly available online. In this blog, we will discuss some of those policies including host company vetting, advocacy and compliance efforts, Exchange Visitor education and ongoing support, and our dedicated participant support team.
Host Company Vetting
At Cultural Vistas, we do not provide placements (i.e. arranging internship or training opportunities by matching candidates with host organizations) outside of a few grant programs such as Korea WEST. This means that for nearly all of our J-1 visa applicants, participants and host organizations contact Cultural Vistas with opportunities that are pre-arranged. When a company reaches out to us for the first time, the first order of business is to vet that organization to ensure that they are offering a viable program.
To host an intern or trainee, Cultural Vistas requires that companies:
- Utilize the J‐1 visa solely to provide a cultural and career learning experience for participants and not purely for employment purposes.
- Offer participants robust and meaningful opportunities that are in line with their educational and professional experience.
- Provide full-time employment (at least 32 hours per week) and ensure that no more than 20% of the participant’s time is spent on unskilled or clerical tasks.
- Have sufficient resources and knowledgeable staff available to conduct the training, and willingness and capacity to mentor an international participant.
- Provide continuous on‐site supervision of participants and their program activities and provide feedback to facilitate the participant’s development.
The J‑1 Business Development Team at Cultural Vistas communicates all program requirements during host company onboarding, while also discussing each company’s plans for the internship program and confirming their understanding and commitment to compliance. Additionally, the team researches each company to develop an overview that includes a concise description of the organization’s work and structure, green flags indicating strong program potential, red flags signaling financial or operational concerns, and an assessment of the company’s overall financial viability.
Additionally, based on regulatory restrictions and Cultural Vistas’ extensive experience with high levels of fraud and participant dissatisfaction in certain sectors, we do not work with specific industries or positions. Programs in these fields are not eligible for J1 Intern or Trainee sponsorship: flight training; performing arts, including dance instruction; roles involving more than 20% clerical work; unskilled labor; positions that receive tips as part of compensation; any clinical or medical patient care or contact; programs involving staffing agencies or unauthorized recruiters; placements at economy hotels, fast-food restaurants, bakeries, home offices, or retail sites; programs at camps or residential facilities; and roles in construction, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, similar in-home installation services, or auto body shops.

Participant Education and Support
Cultural Vistas provides comprehensive pre-arrival orientation to ensure every J1 Intern and Trainee is well-prepared for their exchange experience before departing for the United States. Participants receive guidance on understanding their visa documents, navigating the consular interview, planning travel, managing arrival logistics, validating visa status, and handling essentials such as housing, transportation, banking, and safety. These resources help participants understand the cultural and practical realities of living in the United States and build confidence before they begin their programs.
Throughout the exchange period, Cultural Vistas offers strong safety and compliance support, health insurance coverage, and 24/7 emergency assistance for any matter affecting a participant’s health, well-being, or program participation. The U.S. Department of State requires all exchange visitors to have health insurance for the full duration of their training program. To ensure compliance with these regulations, CV offers three options for individual health insurance: Standard Lite for $60/month, Enhanced for $100/month, and Family Lite for $120/month. These affordable options can be used alone or as a supplement to an employer-provided plan. Participants also receive access to Telus, an online therapy platform that allows users to engage in counseling with an individual licensed therapist through unlimited text, audio, and video messages in a private chat room.
Cultural Vistas also provides ongoing educational webinars on key topics such as how to use their health insurance, understanding U.S. healthcare, and filing U.S. taxes—areas that can be confusing for first-time visitors. These live sessions allow participants to ask questions, receive timely guidance, and stay informed throughout their program.
To further promote success and cultural immersion, participants benefit from structured community and cultural integration resources as well as a dedicated participant support team. Cultural Vistas equips participants with tools to understand U.S. workplace norms, adapt to local culture, and navigate stages of cultural adjustment. Additionally, Visa Specialists remain available throughout the program to answer questions, support SEVIS compliance, assist with program changes, and help participants address challenges as they arise. This ongoing, personalized support ensures participants can thrive both professionally and culturally during their time in the United States.
