Stories
A new year invites reflection not only on what lies ahead, but on what endures. For Cultural Vistas, one belief has remained constant across decades: strong human connections across borders are essential to a healthier, more resilient world.
At a time when many Americans are thinking more intentionally about our relationships with people around the globe, it is worth remembering that these ties are built not through institutions alone, but through individuals through exchange, collaboration, curiosity, and trust. This is where Cultural Vistas has always focused its work, and where we are doubling down in the year ahead.
Why Human Connection Matters
Global networks are not abstract ideals. They are practical systems that help societies learn, adapt, and solve problems together.
Research increasingly reinforces what many of our alumni know firsthand: people learn and lead best in connection with others, especially across difference. Social neuroscience research, including work by Matthew Lieberman, shows that the brain systems used for reasoning, learning, and decision making are closely tied to those we use for social understanding. Connection does not distract from serious thinking. It supports it.
Engagement across cultures and perspectives increases cognitive flexibility, deepens empathy, and improves the ability to navigate complexity. At scale, these individual shifts contribute to societies that are better equipped to collaborate, innovate, and respond constructively to change.
Diverse professional networks are associated with stronger innovation and problem-solving. Leaders with international experience tend to be more adaptable and resilient. Cross-border relationships accelerate the sharing of ideas and solutions during periods of transition.
Connection in Action
Across our alumni and partner communities, we see this in practice every day. Professionals exchange knowledge across borders to strengthen public health, education, and workforce development. Climate and sustainability leaders coordinate local action through global peer communities. Social entrepreneurs adapt ideas learned abroad to meet needs at home.
Cultural Vistas alumni collaborate years later across sectors and countries to launch initiatives, influence institutions, and mentor the next generation. These outcomes do not happen by chance. They result from sustained investment in people and relationships over time.

Building on Momentum: Atlas Corps Leadership Institute
Just over a year ago, Cultural Vistas took an important step by integrating the Atlas Corps Fellowship into our organization, strengthening our shared global community of values-driven leaders committed to social impact and public service.
This year, we are building on that momentum with the launch of the Atlas Corps Leadership Institute, a new platform designed to strengthen leadership capacity across borders and sectors. The Institute brings together participants from around the world to deepen systems thinking, build lasting peer relationships, and clarify how they can shape a more inclusive and sustainable future together.
Looking Ahead
In the year ahead, Cultural Vistas is strengthening and expanding our global networks in three key areas: alumni, regions, and partners.
We are deepening opportunities for alumni leadership, mentorship, and continued learning. We are expanding partnerships in priority regions, including implementing our first European Commission project supporting the people of Ukraine and advancing new initiatives focused on peace and reconciliation in Southeast Asia.
And we are growing collaborations with companies, universities, and institutions that recognize the value of global talent and cross-cultural exchange.
A Shared Opportunity
As we look ahead, we invite our alumni and partners to play an active role in strengthening cross-border connections for the next generation of leaders.
If you know someone who would benefit from participating in the Atlas Corps Leadership Institute or who is working to drive social impact within their community or organization, we encourage you to refer them to learn more.
In the coming months, I will be meeting with alumni to discuss how we can continue building meaningful global connections together.
Together, these efforts reinforce our core mission: connecting people across borders in ways that strengthen individuals, institutions, and societies.
