Cultural Vistas Alumni Happenings: October 2015

Our alumni are making waves in the fields of international education, journalism, and social good. Here are a few highlights of the recent accomplishments of our alumni.

Susana Guzman

A 2015 Cultural Vistas Fellowship alumna and student at Florida International University, Susana Guzman is now in Washington, D.C. interning with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Through her fellowship, Susana completed an internship with the Foundation de la Tierra in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Inspired by her experience in Argentina, Susana organized an interactive, outdoor lesson about the environment for an elementary school in her hometown of Miami, Florida.

Susana Guzman teaches children in Buenos Aires about the environment through her internships at Foundation de la Tierra.

Charly Wilder

Charly Wilder, a recent Alfa Fellowship Program alumna, published a New York Times article titled “36 Hours in Berlin,” where she maps out all of the activities one should do within 36 hours to get to know the city of Berlin. 36 Hours is a regular New York Times column and has recently inspired a television program by the same name that can be found on the Travel Channel. Be sure to check both the article and videos for the full scoop on what to do when in Berlin.

Andrew Budsock and Jules Guiang

Whether by coincidence or fate (we think fate), Andrew Budsock, CBYX alumnus, and Jules Guiang, YSEALI alumnus, met up in the digital press room at Mashable‘s 2015 Social Good Summit. Jules had the opportunity to attend the summit during his internship with us at Cultural Vistas, which he won as a results of his excellent participation in the YSEALI Generation: Earth workshop in Cambodia. Andrew is also a contributor to our blog, recently writing the article “There’s No ‘I’ In STEM, But There Should Be.”

We loved seeing two alumni from very different programs meet up during all the excitement of the summit. We’re looking forward to seeing more cross-program connections like this emerge as we ramp up our Cultural Vistas alumni programming in the months to come.

The world just got a little bit smaller! #CBYX + #YSEALI alumni met today while participating as digital press at the #SocialGood Summit in NYC. Glad to see our diverse connecting over shared passions and interests! #CulturalVistasAlumni #YSEALIGenEarth #cbyxppp #2030NOW #ExchangeAlumni

Hafiz Rehmatullah

An International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) alumnus from Pakistan, Hafiz recently returned to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Next Generation Leaders program at the McCain Institute. This year-long professional development program includes an intense training that focuses on the values, ethics, and leadership aspects of humanitarian action, human rights and democracy, and national security. Hafiz previously works as a human rights activist dedicated to ending human trafficking in Balochistan.
