On behalf of the U.S. Department of State, it is our pleasure to announce the newest cohort of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals program! Young Americans from across the United States were selected for the 2025-2026 exchange. The group arrived in Germany on July 26th for an 11-month program of intensive language studies, homestay, internships and university study with placements throughout Germany.
The 2025-2026 cohort represents 29 states and territories. Participant career fields include chemistry, engineering, public health, marketing, international affairs, library sciences, and art conservation, among many others.
Now in its 42nd year as a joint program of the German Bundestag and U.S. Congress, CBYX for Young Professionals provides 65 American and 65 German young leaders the opportunity to spend up to a year in each other’s countries studying, interning, and living with host families. The fellowship is open to candidates in all career fields between the ages of 18 ½ and 24 who are interested in a year of academic, professional, and cultural exchange. CBYX also offers opportunities for high school students and individuals interested in vocational training. You can learn more about the CBYX program at exchanges.state.gov/cbyx.

Will Lewis

Most Recent Educational Institution: Auburn University
Professional Field: Economics
Will Lewis is a recent graduate of Auburn University with a double major in Economics and German. Growing up in Auburn, Will has a deeply ingrained love and appreciation for his community and university. Throughout his time at Auburn, he was involved with various organizations, including WEGL 91.1 FM, Auburn’s student-run radio station. Upon graduation, Will was awarded a spot as one of 65 young Americans participating in the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange program. This program will allow him to spend a year in Germany studying, working, volunteering, and connecting with a new community.
Mackenzie Williams

Most Recent Educational Institution: University of Alabama in Huntsville
Professional Field: Aerospace Engineering
Mackenzie Williams graduated cum laude from the University of Alabama in Huntsville with a BS in Aerospace Engineering and minors in German and Mathematics. She worked as an undergraduate researcher under Dr. Isaac Torres-Díaz, researching Anisotropic Spiky Colloidal simulations, and also gained industry experience through an internship in automotive manufacturing. Outside of school and work, she enjoys rock climbing and playing games with friends. She is looking forward to improving her German and experiencing new things.
McKenzie Woodhead

Most Recent Educational Institution: Arizona State University
Professional Field: Economic Policy and Public Policy
McKenzie Woodhead recently graduated from Arizona State University with a B.S. in Economics (Politics and the Economy) and a minor in Sustainability. Her interests lie at the intersection of economic analysis, public policy, and healthy living.
She has worked with two U.S. federal agencies, gaining hands-on experience in applying economic principles to policy contexts. In addition to her academic and professional pursuits, McKenzie has taught yoga and barre for the past three years, reflecting her commitment to health, well-being, and community engagement.
As a 2025-2026 CBYX for Young Professionals fellow, McKenzie is eager to deepen her understanding of environmental economics and economic policy frameworks. While in Germany, she is seeking an internship in the fields of economics or public policy. She is especially looking forward to experiencing Germany’s rich cultural traditions firsthand, including seasonal festivals and celebrations such as Oktoberfest, Karneval, Christmas markets, Easter bonfires, and local fall holidays.
Sarah Banapour

Professional Field: Science Communications
Sarah recently graduated from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, with a degree in English and minors in Environmental Studies, Science & Risk Communication, and Media Arts, Society, & Technology. She is passionate about environmental justice and science communication, and has worked in nonprofit communications supporting environmental health and justice initiatives.
Katelyn Birchfield

Most Recent Educational Institution: University of California, Berkeley
Professional Field: Environmental Engineering
Katelyn is a water treatment engineer living in Berkeley, California. She graduated in May 2024 from UC Berkeley, where she studied Environmental Engineering Science. Katelyn is passionate about solving environmental justice issues and plans to focus her career on finding solutions that lead to broader systemic change. As a participant in CBYX, Katelyn hopes to help increase collaboration on environmental issues and learn more about how Germany is addressing climate change. In her free time, she enjoys backpacking, reading, dancing, baking, and singing with her a cappella group, the Trill Seekers.
Justin Eccleston

Professional Field: Digital Marketing
Justin is a 23-year-old Digital Marketer currently studying E-Commerce at Cal Poly Pomona. Eager to put his knowledge into practice, Justin’s passion for Marketing and Customer Psychology led him to pursue and secure freelance work while still in school.
He enjoys music, sports, connection, and a good challenge. Justin hopes to expand his worldview, develop genuine relationships between Germany and the US, and leverage his cultural insights to advance his ongoing marketing career.
Alfina Eull

Most Recent Educational Institution: El Camino College
Professional Field: Bioengineering
Alfina Eull is a student at El Camino College in Torrance, California. She hopes to pursue a degree in bioengineering and a career in research at a national laboratory or other facility. By participating in the CBYX program, Alfina aims to learn as much German as possible, broaden her perspective, and gain insight into international policy while immersed in another culture. In her free time, Alfina enjoys reading books, swimming, and playing music. She also enjoys exploring nature and participating in outdoor activities with her friends.
Priya Malelu

Most Recent Educational Institution: American River College
Professional Field: Art and Technology Priya Malelu is a 22-year-old college student from Sacramento, California, with a deep passion for both the arts and technology. They are especially interested in exploring the intersection of these fields during their time in Germany. After completing the CBYX program, Priya plans to go to UC Davis to finish their bachelor’s degree, and then pursue a PhD with the goal of becoming a university professor. Outside of academics, Priya enjoys painting and crocheting as creative outlets.
Henry Moraja

Most Recent Educational Institution: Colorado College
Professional Field: Library Science
Henry Moraja graduated summa cum laude from Colorado College in May 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing and German Studies. He has nearly a decade of experience in both volunteer and professional work in libraries, which has inspired his passion for and dedication to making information accessible to as many communities as possible. While in Germany, he looks forward to strengthening his German language skills and gaining an international understanding of librarianship that will inform his career as an academic librarian.
Julian Cote-Dorado

Professional Field: International Relations
Julian is a recent honors graduate from the University of Connecticut, where he majored in Political Science and minored in German and Economics. Julian grew up on the East Coast of the USA, and in addition to English, he also grew up speaking French and Spanish. He has interned for the U.S. State Department and the Connecticut General Assembly and has worked as a research assistant at the University of Connecticut. He first traveled to Germany through UConn’s bilateral exchange program with Baden-Württemberg, and spent a year at Heidelberg University, where he learned his first words in German. He is passionate about travel and cultural exchange.
Ian Steele

Most Recent Educational Institution: University of Delaware
Professional Field: Computer and Cognitive Sciences
Ian is a recent graduate from the University of Delaware, where he earned double B.S. degrees in Computer Science and Cognitive Science in May 2025. His undergraduate years revealed a passion for the humanities, leading him to complete minors in Religious Studies and Ancient Greek and Roman Studies. He also earned a German for Engineering Certificate and studied abroad in Leipzig in 2023. In his leisure, he enjoys swimming, listening to classic rock, and reading authors such as Nietzsche and Freud. Having worked in local politics in his home state of Delaware, Ian plans to make an impact abroad in Germany through CBYX, where he intends to deepen German-American relations, explore more of his heritage, and shape future connections between technology, politics, and culture.
Lily Pérez

Most Recent Educational Institution: Yale University
Professional Field: Cultural Policy and Arts Administration
Lily Pérez grew up in Washington, DC, and graduated from Yale College in 2024 with a degree in Theater and Performance Studies. She has spent the past year serving as an AmeriCorps volunteer at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, a nonprofit arts education organization located on an island in southeast Alaska. At Yale, Lily was a peer mentor for the Latin American Cultural Center, a writing tutor, and president of the Yale Dramatic Association, the country’s oldest continuously running undergraduate theater organization. Passionate about the intersection of public service and the arts, she also interned for GALA Hispanic Theater in Washington, DC, and the City of New Haven Department of Arts and Culture as a Yale President’s Public Service Fellow.
Sarah Brophy

Most Recent Educational Institution: Florida State University
Professional Field: International Relations and History
Sarah A. Brophy is a dedicated scholar and emerging leader in the fields of political science and history. Her academic focus centers on gender, resistance, and democratic resilience, with a thesis examining interfaith marriages and gendered privilege during the Nazi regime. Sarah brings extensive experience in archival and policy research, having worked with the Rosenstrasse Foundation, FSU’s Center for Undergraduate Research, and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. She has been a Tyler Center for Global Studies Fellow, Washington Scholar, and Social Science Scholar, and is committed to advancing democracy through education, research, and public advocacy.
Passionate about civic engagement and public service, Sarah has served in multiple roles, including those with Florida State Representative Robin Bartleman, the International Rescue Committee, and the Florida House Democratic Office. At FSU, she held leadership positions in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program and the Rosenstrasse Foundation.
Sarah plans to pursue graduate studies in public policy or international affairs, continuing her mission to promote justice, civic courage, and inclusive governance worldwide.
Astrid Faulkner

Professional Field: Public History
Astrid Faulkner is a recent graduate of the University of Central Florida, where she studied Humanities & Cultural Studies alongside a minor in Music and a certificate in German Studies. While at UCF, she worked as a digital archive assistant on her university’s PRINT Project (People, Religion, Information Networks, Travel), where she conducted research on 17th- and 18th-century Pietists and German immigrants. Astrid hopes to further expand her interests in history while pursuing a career in archival or museum work.
Hope Oladipo

Professional Field: International Affairs Hope Oladipo is an alumna of the University of Florida, where she received her bachelor’s degrees in International Studies and Political Science, as well as minors in Spanish and European Union Studies. Afterwards, she stepped into the classroom as a member of the 2023 Teach for America corps. While participating in the program, she attended Arizona State University and earned her master’s degree in secondary education. As a member of the 42nd CBYX/PPP cohort, Hope looks forward to delving deeper into German politics and learning more about German culture.

Keberlynn St Louis
Most Recent Educational Institution: Quinnipiac University
Professional Field: Biology
Keberlynn St. Louis is a Florida native and a post-graduate in biology from Quinnipiac University, where she also minored in psychology. Keberlynn is fascinated by anything related to the brain and mind. She has participated in research, volunteered, and served her local community.
Beyond academics and services, she enjoys going to the gym, heavy lifting, dancing, and getting lost in a good book. She finds these activities to be helpful in keeping her grounded, creative, and energized. Practicing her faith is a crucial part of who she is–it shapes how she approaches challenges, relationships, and opportunities like CBYX with purpose and humility.
Keberlynn chose to participate in the CBYX program because she believes that cultural exchange can develop understanding, empathy, and global citizenship. Through this experience, she hopes to step outside of her comfort zone, build language skills, and advance both personally and professionally. She is looking forward to immersing herself in German culture, building lasting relationships, and gaining new perspectives that will shape her interactions with the outside world moving forward.
Jiahe Yao

Most Recent Educational Institution: University of Florida
Professional Field: Healthcare Systems Engineering
Jiahe immigrated to the USA in 2007 from northeastern China and grew up in Gainesville, Florida. She attended the University of Florida, where she was involved in various local arts organizations and contributed to research in plant pathology and sociology as a data scientist. She graduated in 2023 with a BS in Statistics and has since been working in Madison, Wisconsin, as an engineer at Epic Systems, a medical software company. Jiahe is also a visual artist and avid fan of film, music, and cooking. In Germany, she hopes to expand her knowledge of international healthcare systems and meet people with whom she can share her interests and hobbies.
Luke Jackson

Most Recent Educational Institution: Cornell University
Professional Field: Environmental Advocate/ Environmental Scientist
Luke Jackson is an alumnus of Cornell University and an Atlanta native. Luke is the grandson of the late mayor of Atlanta, Maynard Jackson Junior, and the powerhouse public relations professional Bunnie Jackson-Ransom. Maynard Jackson is, of course, the first black mayor of Atlanta and of any major southern city. Luke enjoys playing tennis, exploring the natural forces of Atlanta, reading Philosophy, and staying active as a brother of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. At Cornell, Luke enjoyed staying politically active, campaigning for State Senator Webb of the Tompkins County/ Finger Lakes region in New York, staying active with Cornell Democrats, and focused on his studies in natural physical sciences, like geophysics and oceanography, and also developed expertise in environmental psychology, environmental law and policy, environmental decision-making, and climate change communication. He also earned his minor in German at Cornell University and has recently been awarded a State Department fellowship, the CBYX Young Professionals Fellowship, to study in Germany for a year. Luke will be studying Geography and preparing himself for a career in environmental advocacy as an attorney by working a practicum or internship in/near Stuttgart, Baden-Württemburg, Germany.
Brian Niswonger

Most Recent Educational Institution: The University of Alabama in Huntsville
Professional Field: Public Health
Brian Niswonger is a Kinesiology student from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Originally from Powder Springs, Georgia, Brian has found a home in the state and on campus through various opportunities, both professional and social. Being involved on campus at UAH has given him opportunities in various organizations and positions, including Emerging Leaders, SOAR (Serving, Organizing, Advocating, and Reflecting), Greek Life, and University Admissions as an Orientation Leader. Brian has also served as a University Representative and Regional Director on the Student Retention Council under the Higher Education Partnership of Alabama. In his free time, Brian enjoys spending time outdoors and hopes to pursue professional opportunities that encourage people to spend their time actively and engage with their local communities and environment. Recently, Brian was awarded a finalist position in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX-YP) program. Over the next year, he will be living in Germany, where he will strive to establish connections and build a community, with the ultimate goal of promoting cultural diplomacy.
Reese Saddler

Reese Saddler is a recent graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, where she earned a degree in Global Economics and Modern Languages with a concentration in German. Throughout her studies, Reese deepened her interest in the German language and culture by studying abroad in Germany and Austria, as well as interning with German companies such as Porsche Design and SAP. She looks forward to immersing herself in daily life in Germany and further developing her German-speaking skills during this program. Looking ahead, Reese is eager to pursue a career in marketing or project management, where she can apply her global perspective and professional experience.
Hali Kai Lujan Castro

Most Recent Educational Institution: College of Charleston
Professional Field: International Law, International Education
Hali Kai Cecilia Lujan Castro graduated from the College of Charleston in December 2024 with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and a minor in Spanish. Originally from the Pacific Island and U.S. territory of Guam, she has always been passionate about human rights, language-learning, music, and multicultural exchange. Throughout and following her university studies, Hali Kai worked in both the educational and nonprofit sectors, gaining experience in language instruction as a Spanish Peer Teacher, literacy education as a Reading Partners AmeriCorps member, and arts/nonprofit management as an assistant at Chamber Music Charleston, among other roles. In her senior year of university, she co-founded a student chapter of Amnesty International, which affirmed her passion for human rights and connected her to various activist networks and campaigns throughout the Southeast U.S. These enriching experiences have inspired Hali Kai to become a human rights lawyer, as she plans to attend law school following her year in Germany. Hali Kai is thrilled to have the opportunity to hone in on her passions as a youth cultural ambassador and aspiring lawyer during her year with CBYX.

Adepoju Arogundade

Most Recent Educational Institution: Bowdoin College
Professional Field: Transportation Adepoju is from Springfield, Illinois, and graduated from Bowdoin College in 2025 with a coordinated major in Environmental Studies and Earth and Oceanographic Science. He is committed to addressing climate change through sustainable, equitable, and efficient transportation. Adepoju is a member of COMTO (Conference of Minority Transportation Officials) and has interned with state and federal Departments of Transportation in New England. Adepoju is excited to experience German transit and urban design after spending time in Denmark and Japan. He aspires to become a transportation planner after completing his studies at CBYX. In addition, Adepoju is thrilled to build international companionship through sports and language. At Bowdoin, Adepoju was a hurdler, 2x All-American, and captain of the track team. He documented his student-athlete experience on his YouTube channel. Adepoju looks forward to immersing himself in Germany’s football culture while seeking to overcome the challenges of a new language.
Audge Carberry

Audge Carberry is a multimedia artist from Geneva, Illinois. They attended Loyola University Chicago for their undergraduate studies, where they studied environmental science and participated in student government during their time there. Post-grad, Audge began participating in poetry readings and art fairs across Chicago. Prior to their acceptance to CBYX, they worked as the Communications and Marketing Coordinator at Spanish Coalition for Housing.
Yustyn Kokor

Most Recent Educational Institution: DePaul University
Professional Field: Economics, Mathematics
Yustyn is a junior at DePaul University, studying Economics and Math. As a young ambassador of the U.S., he hopes to share his experience as a recently naturalized citizen and express his gratitude for all that this country has given him. While in Germany, he hopes to deepen his understanding of German history and the immigrant communities, improve his German language skills, build lifelong friendships, and master the intricacies of recycling. In his free time, Yustyn enjoys gardening, biking, and fishing. After CBYX, he plans to finish his bachelor’s degree and pursue graduate school.
Aisaiah Pellecer

Most Recent Educational Institution: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Professional Field: Information Sciences and Data Science
Aisaiah Pellecer is a recent graduate of the University of Illinois, where he earned a B.S. in Information Sciences and Data Science. He is a Chicago native and proud of the community’s global roots and local heart, which he calls home. Through his academic studies and professional experiences, including time with the Library of Congress Labs and research under the guidance of Dr. Anita Say Chan, Aisaiah has developed a deep interest in the relationship between information, democracy, and social equity. In the future, he hopes to continue his education through graduate school with these concentrations in mind. During his time in Germany, he is excited to learn from the technological innovations, history, and schools of thought that define both Germany and the broader Schengen area.
Camryn Reschke

Most Recent Educational Institution: Grinnell College
Professional Field: Research and Public History, Hospitality Camryn Reschke is a recent graduate of Grinnell College and holds a B.A. with honors in History. During her undergraduate studies, she researched early 20th-century German history. Her expansive love for learning motivated her to study a broad range of subjects related to German studies, although her most recent research projects have focused on sociopolitical movements and gender/sexuality. When not studying, Camryn works in the Hospitality industry, gaining highly valuable skills such as strong guest relations and keen problem-solving skills. She looks forward to volunteering at a Tierheim in her German placement city and hopes to gain a deeper understanding of the German past and its evolving present.
Alexander Wojnicki

Most Recent Educational Institution: Appalachian State University
Professional Field: International Environmental Policy
Alex Wojnicki is 22 years old and originally from Woodstock, Illinois. He graduated magna cum laude from Appalachian State University in North Carolina, where he studied Political Science with a concentration in International and Comparative Politics and a minor in Sustainable Development.
During college at Appalachian State, Alex studied abroad in the Czech Republic. This experience deepened his passion for cultural exchange and global connection. As a recipient of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals scholarship, he will spend the next year in Germany learning German, studying at a University, and interning in Environmental and International Policy with a German organization.
In his free time, he truly enjoys all aspects of life. From meeting new people and exploring different cultures to spending time outdoors and playing all kinds of sports, he looks forward to a great year full of adventure, challenges, and personal growth. You can often find him playing guitar or debating international issues with friends and colleagues.
Zora Emmert

Most Recent Educational Institution: Purdue University
Professional Field: Materials Engineering
Zora Emmert is a recent graduate of Purdue University with a degree in Materials Engineering and a minor in German. At Purdue, she served on the leadership team for the Women in Engineering program, where she aimed to create a supportive community for women engineering students. She also worked for Purdue Galleries, where she combined her interests in art and science through collaborating on scientific research of Eastern Orthodox icons. In Germany, Zora looks forward to deepening her understanding of German culture, advancing her German language skills, and building meaningful intercultural relationships.
Biruk Alemu

Most Recent Educational Institution: Kansas State University
Professional Field: Political Science/ International Area Studies
Biruk Alemu immigrated to Olathe, Kansas, in 2017 and attended Olathe North High School. After Graduation, he joined Kansas State University, where he double-majored in Political Science and International Area Studies. In addition, he served in the Kansas Army National Guard from 2019 to 2025, deploying to the Middle East in 2024.
Lindsey Locke

Most Recent Educational Institution: Northern Michigan University
Professional Field: International Studies & Spanish
Lindsey Locke is from Overland Park, Kansas, and recently graduated from Northern Michigan University with a double major in International Studies and Spanish. She studied in Peru and Mexico, with a focus on Indigenous communities and cultural exchange. During her time at NMU, she was a collegiate lacrosse athlete and served as Media Outreach Coordinator for the Department of Languages, Literatures, and International Studies. She also works as a Special Needs Care Associate with Matthew’s Ministry, supporting individuals with disabilities. She is passionate about preserving Indigenous culture, archaeology, language learning, humanitarian service, and fitness. She looks forward to fully embracing German culture, building meaningful connections, and learning as much as she can during the CBYX program.
Tamia Bowers

Most Recent Educational Institution: University of Maryland, Baltimore
Professional Field: Mechanical Engineer
Tamia Bowers is a native of Silver Spring, Maryland, and an alumna of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Tamia earned her degree in Mechanical Engineering from UMBC and currently conducts research through the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Post-Baccalaureate Research Experience, focusing on magneto-active composites and structures. Through CBYX, Tamia will spend a year in Germany advancing her language skills, professional development, and global perspective as she prepares to pursue graduate studies in engineering and translational research.
Lily Lei

Most Recent Educational Institution: University of Virginia
Professional Field: Biological Research/Medicine Lily is a recent graduate from the University of Virginia with a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Cognitive Science. At UVA, she served as a research assistant in the Civelek lab, which is affiliated with the Biomedical Engineering department and the Center for Public Health Genomics. She also volunteered at the UVA hospital and local clinics and was an active member of cultural organizations. Last summer, she had the opportunity to do a research internship at Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf through the DAAD RISE program. She’s excited to return to Germany through the CBYX program and looks forward to learning more about Germany’s research environment and healthcare system. Following the completion of the program, she plans to work and apply to medical school.
Varshana Rammarine

Most Recent Educational Institution: Montgomery College
Professional Field: Criminal Justice Varshana Ramnarine graduated in 2025 from Montgomery College with an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. During her time at Montgomery College, Varshana was a member of the Montgomery Scholars and had the opportunity to intern at the D.C. Superior Courthouse through D.C. Witness. This experience illuminated and informed her perspective on the intricacies of the criminal justice system by advocating for justice through transparency and accountability. She also had the chance to write a bench memo for the Maryland Supreme Court’s visit to Montgomery College. Varshana is excited to immerse herself in German culture and society to gain a better understanding of differing perspectives, venture outside of her comfort zone, and experience a new approach to law and order. After her time in Germany, she is looking forward to continuing her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at a higher educational institution.
Hannah Burton

Most Recent Educational Institution: George Washington University
Professional Field: Cultural Studies & Public History Hannah Burton is a recent graduate of George Washington University, where she earned a B.A. in German Language & Literature. Originally from Massachusetts, she developed a passion for German culture, inspired by stories of her grandmother immigrating from Munich to Boston after World War II. She spent her entire junior year abroad in Munich, where she interned at the NS-Dokumentationszentrum München and participated in planning an upcoming exhibit at a former forced labor camp. Brian Merdani

Brian Merdani recently graduated from American University’s School of International Service, where he studied International Relations with a concentration in National Security and Foreign Policy. A proud first-generation American from Chelsea, Massachusetts, Brian grew up speaking Albanian at home and is trilingual in English, Albanian, and German. During his undergraduate years, he interned at the Albanian Embassy in Washington, D.C., where he supported consular and diplomatic work, and at Amerikahaus Munich, where he contributed to U.S.-German educational outreach and transatlantic engagement. Outside of academics, Brian coaches youth flag football and is especially interested in the role of sports diplomacy in fostering cultural exchange.
As a CBYX fellow, Brian is excited to deepen his understanding of Germany’s role in European and global security, improve his language fluency, and build cross-cultural connections. After the program, he plans to pursue a career focused on strengthening transatlantic security cooperation within the defense and foreign policy sectors.
Lauren Peck

Professional Field: International Diplomacy Lauren Peck is a recent honors graduate of the University of Michigan, where she earned degrees in Public Policy and Spanish. At the Gerald R. Ford School, she concentrated in Global Sustainability and Social Innovation, with a focus on the intersection of international diplomacy, energy, trade, and climate action. Her experience spans local to international levels, including roles with a nonprofit in Madrid, the U.S. Department of Energy, and one of the nation’s leading environmental advocacy groups. She played a role in advancing the Inflation Reduction Act — both federally, under Secretary Jennifer Granholm, and at the state level as the Energy Savings Now Project Lead with the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. As a CBYX fellow in Germany, Lauren is excited to serve as a citizen ambassador–fostering mutual understanding, strengthening transatlantic ties, and representing the values of public service. She looks forward to immersing herself in German culture, expanding her understanding of global energy systems, and engaging with the institutions shaping Europe’s climate leadership. Passionate about international affairs, Lauren hopes to one day represent the United States on the world stage.

Mattias recently graduated magna cum laude from Carleton College with a degree in philosophy. He is originally from Berkeley, California. During his time at Carleton, Mattias was an avid participant in Mock Trial and Model UN. He also worked in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the Office of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District during his time in college. Mattias hopes to use his time in Germany to strengthen his German skills, work within Germany’s migrant accommodation system, and gain a comparative perspective on law and public policy. After CBYX, Mattias plans to pursue a law degree while exploring areas such as antitrust, appellate, and impact litigation.
Aubrey Nistler

Aubrey Nistler is a recent graduate of St. Olaf College, where she earned a B.A. in Political Science with concentrations in International Relations and Latin American Studies. Throughout her academic journey, she served as Treasurer and Secretary to the National Political Science Honor Society, Organizer for the Environmental Coalition, Off-Campus Coordinator with the Programming Board, and Peer Advisor for the Piper Center for Vocation and Career. During this time, she also pursued internships under various non-profit organizations, including Women Winning, the Union Park District Council, the Minnesota Council on Economic Education, and Global Kids DC. These experiences significantly enriched her understanding of international dialogue and grassroots advocacy, further cultivating her interests in sustainable development and conflict prevention. She looks forward to engaging with these topics further in Germany, where she hopes to advance her German language proficiency and immerse herself in the foreign policy scene.

Kalsey Colotl recently graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Music in Music Technology. During her undergraduate years, she gained professional experience as a front-of-house engineer both on campus and throughout New York City, worked as a recording engineer at NYU Steinhardt’s James L. Dolan recording studio, and served as an audio post-production intern for the “Why It Matters” podcast. Her commitment to international and cultural collaboration led her to found the Chinese Traditional Music Club with fellow classmates, become a founding member of the NYU Mariachi Violettas, and serve as a Global Equity Fellow during her semester abroad in Prague, Czech Republic. This passion for international exchange inspired her to apply for the CBYX/PPP program. Growing up bilingual (Spanish & English), she became enthusiastic about learning languages, including Japanese, Korean, Czech, and German. While in Germany, Kalsey plans to enhance her sound reinforcement expertise by interning in the local music scene. After completing the program, she will return to NYU to finish her final year in the Master’s degree program in Music Technology.

Jayden Fuller, 24, has been awarded the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals fellowship. A proud New York native born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, Fuller graduated summa cum laude from Baruch College (CUNY) in 2022 with a BBA in Marketing Management. She brings three years of eCommerce experience with brands such as Milk Makeup, Calvin Klein, Max Mara, and Foot Locker Inc.
With roots in Jamaican and British heritage, Fuller’s passion for cultural exchange was sparked during an internship at a German company, where she was encouraged to “follow [her] Schnaps-Ideas.” At such a pivotal time in current events, the CBYX fellowship offers her a meaningful opportunity to deepen her German language skills, gain international experience in eCommerce, and explore how youth in Germany and the U.S. are shaping their futures through culture, politics, and connection.
Sonia Birla

Sonia Birla graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2025 with a BSBA in Finance and a BA in Geography and International Studies, along with a minor in German. Deeply committed to urban planning and equitable economic development, she has conducted research and community work across the U.S., Germany, and Thailand. Her experiences include working with Charlotte Center City Partners on community development, researching urban food systems at the University of Pennsylvania’s Venture Lab, and interning in transportation planning at VHB. In 2024, she conducted NSF-funded research in Thailand examining the impacts of COVID-19 and climate change on tropical crop cultivation. Sonia also led a $14,000 project to revitalize a local Charlotte park with the adjacent church. On campus, she served as President of the South Asian Student Association, founder of the Campus Sustainability Alliance, Sustainability Liaison to Student Government, and Vice Chair of the campus green fund. She was named Student Organization Leader of the Year in 2024, was a finalist for the 2024 Harry S. Truman Scholarship, and received the Bonnie Cone Award for Leadership, the highest nonacademic award granted by UNC Charlotte. While in Germany, Sonia is excited to build on her language skills and gain international experience in urban planning.
Salma Mourad

Salma recently graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Global Studies and Political Science, as well as a minor in Arabic. Her academic focus centers on political movements in the Middle East. During the summer of her junior year, she studied abroad in Berlin, where she interned with the nonprofit Give Something Back to Berlin. There, she contributed articles to the organization’s magazine, exploring the impact of its arts- and music-focused events on local immigrant and refugee communities. This experience sparked her interest in ethnomusicology, leading her to complete an Honors Thesis in her senior year on Cairo’s grassroots electronic underground music scene. Her research examined how this music movement fosters community building and self-expression in Egypt. Salma plans to pursue graduate studies in ethnomusicology, with a particular interest in the cultural exchange between Germany and the Middle East.

Wilson Sawyer

Wilson Sawyer is a senior mechanical engineering student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he is also pursuing a minor in mathematics. Throughout his time at UNC Charlotte, Wilson has been actively involved in various campus organizations, including intramural soccer, the German club, and the Formula SAE team. Beyond academics, Wilson enjoys a wide range of interests. He spends his free time playing piano, practicing the German language, working on taxidermy projects, and exploring the outdoors. His love for nature and attention to detail are reflected in both his hobbies and his approach to engineering. Wilson is also deeply involved in his church and values opportunities to serve his local community. Wilson has completed two internships at Daimler Truck North America, where he gained valuable experience in engineering and manufacturing. These opportunities have reinforced his passion for the automotive industry and deepened his interest in vehicle safety development.
Catharine Bruner

Catharine Bruner is a research chemist based in Austin, Texas. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, she graduated from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee in 2023 with a B.S. in Chemistry and a minor in German Studies. At Rhodes, she played trumpet in the Jazz Band and rowed with the Lynx Crew Team. Outside the lab, Catharine is a boxer and hockey player, and stays creative through music and baking. She’s also a Formula 1 fan who loves exploring museums of all kinds and spending time outdoors, so she’s really excited to experience the Black Forest—the mountainous region and the cake!
Emily Miller

Emily Miller is a creative based in Columbus, OH, who specializes in photography and film production. In 2023, she graduated from The Ohio State University with a BA in Moving-Image Production. While at OSU, Emily served as festival director and programmer for the Mad Royal Film Fest and acted as president of the Mad Royal Film Society in 2022. Currently, Emily works as a pastry cook and participates in the Columbus film scene in various roles, including PA, Set Photographer, Camera Operator, and Cinematographer. When in Germany, she looks forward to learning how to make traditional German baked goods, connecting with the local film community, and making art.

Ethan has taken German classes since he was five and is excited to deepen his connection with German culture and enhance his German language skills. I am most interested in exploring the intersection of global business and international relations during my internship. Andrew Lucksinger graduated from Reed College in 2025 with a degree in History and a minor in German, earning Phi Beta Kappa honors. His capstone research project examined West German student movements and assessed the success of postwar US-West German democratization efforts. At Reed, he worked with the International Programs Office to connect peers with scholars and students from around the globe. Through CBYX, Andrew hopes to deepen his understanding of German education and government. In 2024, she helped build paid internships for high school youth centered on environmental justice and job skill development. This year, she is excited to expand her understanding of environmental programming abroad and looks forward to the challenge and joy of learning a new language. Outside of work, she loves renting strange movies, reading in sunny spots, and memorizing the names of local plants.
Jesús Resendiz-Eyler

Jesús Resendiz-Eyler was born and raised in Vancouver, WA, and graduated from Western Washington University in 2024 with a B.A. in Political Science, as well as minors in German, International Relations, and Holocaust and Genocide Studies. While at WWU, Jesús served as the VP of governmental affairs, as well as president of the International Affairs Association and Political Science Association. Since then, he has worked with Congresswoman Gluesenkamp-Perez and in the government and communications department for Clark Public Utilities. He is interested in international relations, diplomacy, and global politics, all of which drew him to participate in CBYX. Following this, he hopes to attend graduate school as part of his route to becoming a foreign service officer.
