On behalf of the U.S. Department of State, it is our pleasure to announce the newest cohort of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals program! Young Americans from across the United States were selected for the 2024-2025 exchange. The group arrived in Germany on July 27th for an 11-month program of intensive language studies, homestay, internships, and university study with placements throughout Germany.
The 2024-2025 cohort represents 37 states and territories. Participant career fields include chemistry, engineering, public health, music performance, international affairs, interior design, social work, among many others.
Now in its 41st year as a joint program of the German Bundestag and U.S. Congress, CBYX for Young Professionals provides 75 American and 75 German young leaders the opportunity to spend up to a year in each other’s countries studying, interning, and living with host families. The fellowship is open to candidates in all career fields between the ages of 18 ½ and 24 who are interested in a year of academic, professional, and cultural exchange. CBYX also offers opportunities for high school students and individuals interested in vocational training. You can learn more about the CBYX program on the U.S. Department of States’ website here.

Dallas Blackwell

Dallas recently graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a B.S. in Public Health, concentrating in Global Health Studies. During her undergraduate studies, she gained valuable experience as a student researcher and intern, working on various field projects involving public health, data analysis, and community engagement. She also served as the vice president of the Oglethorpe University German Club, enhancing cultural engagement. Currently, she is excited to participate in the CBYX program and is eager to study the healthcare system and public health practices in Germany while exploring the application of data science in public health interventions.

Thomas Teper

Professional Field: Aerospace Engineering
Thomas Teper is a Propulsion Systems Graduate Intern at Jacobs working on the analysis of the main propulsion systems on the Artemis and Commercial Crew programs. He graduated with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering and a minor in Computer Science from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Previously an undergraduate researcher at UAH working under Dr. Bryan Mesmer, Thomas researched decision-making and stakeholder preferences for system development approaches like MBSE. He is also a member of Tau Beta Pi, AIAA, and INCOSE. In his free time, Thomas enjoys spending time with friends, listening to music, supporting the Bayern Munich soccer club, and learning new languages.
Huong (Emma) Dang

Professional Field: IT, Software Engineering
Huong Dang graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Informatics. She aims to combine her passion for UX design with software engineering. Since graduating, she has been working in IT, focusing on projects with ERP systems. During college, Huong received the Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, which allowed her to intern abroad in Singapore. This experience deepened her passion for fostering global connections, embracing new cultures, and gaining a deeper understanding of the world. Huong looks forward to exploring the intersection of technology, design, and social good, while also learning German and creating unforgettable memories during her time in Germany.
William Schwartz

Professional Field: Law and Government
William Schwartz is a recent graduate of Georgetown University with a major in International Politics and minors in German and French. As a dual citizen of the United States and the Netherlands, William has always had a keen interest in strengthening the transatlantic relationship. Having interned at the Wilson Center’s Global Europe Program, the BMW Center for German and European Studies, and the U.S. Department of Justice, William continues to be passionate about European law, politics, and economics. Next year, William is excited to improve his German language skills, study German law and politics, and hopefully work for the German government in some capacity.
Pacey Smith-Garcia

Professional Field: Journalism
Pacey Smith-Garcia is a journalist and documentarian who strives to tell great stories. He is a recent graduate from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication where he earned a bachelor’s degree. Along with his studies he worked for ICT News where he worked to tell the stories of global Indigenous communities. Along with the stories he helped create a language segment to help teach Native American languages as well his Ute Mountain Ute language. He produced two award winning documentaries during his studies. In the future he hopes to keep making great documentary films and being a storyteller.
Domenico (Dominic) Piazza

Professional Field: International Relations
Dominic Piazza is an aspiring diplomat from Santa Rosa, California. He received a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Communication and International Relations from the University of California, Davis and recently graduated with a Master of Arts in International Relations from San Francisco State University. Dominic is deeply passionate about international affairs, and he hopes to someday represent the United States on the world stage. He wants to get involved in managing important global issues such as international security and climate change as well as promoting values such as human rights and democracy. His interests include politics and history, and his favorite hobbies include exploring new places, learning new languages, and playing video games. Dominic has studied German politics, and he is thrilled to be a part of CBYX. While in Germany, he plans to learn more about the German government and Germany’s role in the European Union, and he hopes to engage with international organizations. As a citizen ambassador, Dominic looks forward to strengthening the relationship between the United States and Germany.
Grace Whitten
Most Recent Educational Institution: University of California, Berkeley
Professional Field: Museums/Arts Administration
Grace graduated from UC Berkeley in 2022 with highest distinction and degrees in American Studies and Political Science. Her American Studies honors thesis focused on the challenges of curating Art exhibitions that discuss sensitive historical topics. After graduation, Grace went on to work at a communications strategy agency that specializes in progressive issue advocacy. In Germany, Grace hopes to continue pursuing career opportunities both in political advocacy and museums, making compelling historical and political arguments for public audiences.
Jenny Zhi

Jenny Zhi graduated from Stanford University in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Symbolic Systems and a master’s degree in computer science. After graduating, she worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley for two years, and she plans to continue working in this field during her internship in Germany. In her free time, she enjoys dancing and crafting.
Colleen McCleish
Most Recent Educational Institution: University of Oklahoma
Professional Field: Atmospheric Science and Meteorology
Colleen McCleish graduated cum laude from the University of Oklahoma with a BS in Meteorology and a minor in German. She completed research for the OU Atmospheric Aerosols and Air Quality Lab and studied abroad in Germany at the University of Hamburg Meteorological Institute. Outside class, she was a forecaster for the Oklahoma Weather Lab, secretary for the OU German Club, and a figure skating coach. Professionally, Colleen is passionate about environmental protection and aims to pursue a career in sustainability. She looks forward to learning about global environmental approaches in Germany and plans to attend graduate school after CBYX.
Lauren Sauley

Professional Field: Geology/Astrobiology
Lauren recently graduated in May of 2024 with a B.S. in Geology and two minor degrees in Biology and Honors from the University of Wyoming. Over the past four years, Lauren has worked as an undergraduate researcher through the Wyoming Research Scholars Program, where she assisted Dr. Brad Carr in his research on the efficacy of the Self-Potential geophysical method in studying hydrothermal systems in Yellowstone National Park. Lauren presented their research at the annual American Geophysical Union conference in December of 2022. Lauren hopes to obtain fluency in German during her time in Germany, as well as form friendships and experience unique local culture.
Olga Aranzabal

Olga Aranzabal is a Public Health master’s student with a concentration in Global Health Practice. Originally from Cusco, Peru, she has called Tampa home since moving to the United States at the age of fifteen. She has contributed to her community through extensive volunteering and leadership involvement with community-based organizations. Olga is currently part of the USF Salud Latina Initiative, where she also works as a Graduate Research Assistant. She is passionate about promoting health equity and advocating for healthcare access, especially in underserved areas. Through her year abroad in Germany, she looks forward to exploring the intersection of public health and foreign affairs by comparing Germany’s and the United States’ roles in fostering global health diplomacy. She hopes this experience will provide her with the foundation and skills to pursue a professional career in the global health field. Olga is also very excited about learning more about German culture and improving her German language skills. In her free time, Olga enjoys reading, painting, dancing, and spending time with her family and friends. She is also an outdoor enthusiast and looks forward to exploring Germany’s most iconic landscapes, such as the Black Forest.
Valeria Canizares

Valeria Canizares pursued her undergraduate studies at Florida Atlantic University and received two bachelor’s degrees in communication studies and psychology. For graduate school, she attended the University of Florida and received her master’s degree in communication sciences and disorders. She currently works with children as a bilingual English-Spanish speech language pathologist in Austin, Texas. Valeria eagerly embraces the opportunity to be immersed in German communities to learn more about their culture and the language. During her time in Germany, she hopes to work with children and their families in the German education system.
Apollinaire Mendoza
Most Recent Educational Institution: Miami Dade Honors College
Professional Field: International Education
Apollinaire S. Mendoza is an international relations student with an associate in arts from the Miami Dade Honors College. He has been accepted to several exceptional universities to continue his Bachelor of Arts including, the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, and Georgetown University. His work has stretched from teaching at Breakthrough Miami, researching with the Mellon-funded Humanities Edge program, and leading a team of volunteers at a local preschool through Phi Theta Kappa. He is supported by his Cuban immigrant family who, with their love, pushed him toward museums of various subjects to find his interests. He found his passion in the paintings and stories of the figures that dotted the halls of history museums. While on television he discovered the world of politics and diplomacy with the speeches of Barack Obama and the mechanics of the United Nations. Apollinaire aims to make events, figures, and the story behind them more accessible to youth to create a more globally sensitive generation in the future.
Rayyan Merchant
Most Recent Educational Institution: University of Florida
Professional Field: Natural Language Processing/Computational Linguistics
Rayyan Merchant is a recent graduate of the University of Florida, having graduated in December 2023 with a B.A. in Linguistics (Summa Cum Laude) and a B.S. in Computer Science (Cum Laude). He currently works as a Data Labeling Analyst on Meta’s GenAI Safety team via Magnit. The primary thrust of his current research is useful language technology for speakers of low-resource and minority languages. As he has studied the carillon (tower bell instrument) in both the US and Belgium, Rayyan is also quite eager to continue performing while in Germany.
Maya Thompson

Maya Thompson is a writer and editor from South Florida. She earned a Bachelor of the Arts degree in English Literature and Writing from Spelman College in 2023. As one of the 41st CBYX cohorts, Maya intends to strengthen her German proficiency through German literature. She will also take this year in Germany as a consideration to pursue a master’s degree abroad, as well as a position in the international publishing world.
Matthew Valentin

Mr. Matthew Valentin is a recent graduate from Hillsborough Community College (HCC) pursuing an education in international Relations, his dream is to work in foreign relations and global security. Matthew has demonstrated exceptional leadership by serving as an HCC Honors Ambassador, as an intern for U.S. Representative Kathy Castor, and fighting food insecurity through AmeriCorps VISTA. He has represented HCC as one of only three non-voting student trustees in the Florida College System.
Kyraih Jacobs-Reid

Kyraih Jacobs is a 22-year-old fashion designer from Atlanta Georgia. She graduated from Georgia Piedmont Technical College with an associate of Arts in Interdisciplinary studies. She recently showcased her line at a local fashion show. She is passionate about environmental sustainability in fashion and hopes to learn new many new skills as she embarks on a new adventure. She is looking forward to gaining a better understanding of the world and is looking forward to being introduced to German customs.
Lucas Morse

Professional Field: Film
Lucas Morse was born in Dubuque, Iowa. In 2023 he received his BFA in Film from Syracuse University with additional certification from FAMU in Prague, Czech Republic. As a cinematographer, Morse has worked and screened various films internationally, with his most recent film, “Bark of the Dog”, having its world premiere at the National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) in Seattle, WA. Morse currently lives and works in Atlanta, GA.
William Tandy

Professional Field: Translation Editing, Localization
William is a recent graduate of Macalester College, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing with minors in German Studies and Linguistics. He is excited to return to Germany after he studied abroad in Berlin in the spring of 2023. He intends to complete an internship in the publishing industry and work with translations, putting his German proficiency and creative writing skills to work and preparing him for a career in video game translation editing. He also looks forward to building community within the cohort and in his local community in Germany, making lifelong connections in the process!
Kidist (Kidy) Yimenu

Kidy Yimenu was born in Germany and raised in Atlanta, GA. She graduated from Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. She has been passionate about Interior design since she was only 15. After her first trip to her motherland, Ethiopia, Kidy realized her dream of using her knowledge of interior, human-centered design to help improve infrastructure and encourage efficient use of local resources in developing countries.
Teresa Fong

Professional Field: Urban Planning
Teresa Fong is from Meridian, Idaho and she graduated nearby at Boise State University with a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies in the Spring of 2024. Her academics encompass the Plus Business Minor, Urban Studies & Community Development Minor, Leadership & Human Relations Certificate, and Conflict Management Certificate. Her experience includes working in nonprofits, web development, software testing, pharmacy, invasive species research, leadership, and school program development. Among her many interests, she’s most determined to work as an urban planner to support small and local communities in creating a positive future. Teresa is excited to immerse herself in German culture knowing this valuable opportunity will provide personal and professional growth. Teresa will learn about their unique infrastructure history, rebuilt cities, and community engagement strategies. Through living, studying, and interning in Germany she hopes to make cross-cultural connections by sharing some of her American, Lao, and Chinese traditions. As a child of refugee and immigrant parents, she’s curiously thrilled to further explore her American identity. Teresa thanks her family, friends, and teachers for being a source of inspiration and for supporting her endeavors.
Sarah Richman

Sarah Richman is a young professional pursuing a career in government and foreign policy. In 2022, Sarah graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Middle East and North African Studies. Following her graduation, Sarah moved to Chicago and worked as a Dunn Fellow in the Office of Governor JB Pritzker, serving a key role on the Policy Team for Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton. Most recently, Sarah worked as a Legislative Aide for Chicago City Council. Sarah is a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society, and she has studied both French and Arabic language. Sarah is originally from South Salem, New York.
Maureen Thomas

Maureen Thomas is a class of 2024 graduate from The University of Michigan in Mechanical Engineering. Acacia Coker

Acacia Coker recently graduated from Carleton College with a degree in biology. Her interests lie in the intersection of epidemiology, data science, and public policy. While in Germany, she aims to deepen her understanding of the German healthcare system, particularly focusing on migrant health and healthcare disparities. Acacia is also eager to immerse herself in German culture, explore its cities, and learn the language.
Howey
Most Recent Educational Institution: University of Michigan
Professional Field: Nuclear Engineering
Howey recently graduated from the University of Michigan with dual bachelor’s degrees in Nuclear Engineering and Percussion Performance. During her time at U-M, she conducted research on topics such as nuclear microreactor core design and the sociotechnical implications of technology. Her time as a percussion major has led her to premiere new compositions, produce and release her own music, and collaborate with choreographers from around the world. In Germany, she aims to pursue research in nuclear science while staying actively involved in the local music scene. Following her fellowship with CBYX, she plans to pursue a PhD in nuclear engineering at MIT.
John Bingaman

John Bingaman is a recent Centre College graduate from Louisville, Kentucky. He is excited to join the CBYX Young Professionals 41st Cohort and eager for the year ahead. John is interested in arts administration and the performing arts as a tool for international cultural exchange.
Lauren Leong
Most Recent Educational Institution: University of Cincinnati
Professional Field: Political Science and Law
Lauren Leong, recently graduated summa cum laude from the University of Cincinnati with a major in political science and a double minor in sports administration and criminal justice. During her time at the University of Cincinnati she was able to work with many phenomenal organizations most recently the national chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union as their development coordinator where she was able to find funds totaling over $2 million dollars in assets during her tenure. Lauren is also an avid women’s soccer fan and serves as the marketing director for Cincinnati’s semi-professional women’s soccer team, the Sirens. Outside of school and work, Lauren has recently become a half-marathoner running her first race in May raising $2,000 for the American Cancer Society. Eventually she aspires to go to law school with an interest in public interest impact litigation law. One of the things she is most excited about is the possibility of work related to Germany’s Foreign Feminist Policy.
Rafael Hernandez

Professional Field: Political Science
Rafael Hernandez is a Political Science major with a minor in German in his final year at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He has spent the last three years carrying out research on state-level climate action plans for ULL’s Energy Institute of Louisiana. Rafael has also spent the last two years in ULL Speech and Debate, with his Informative Speech “Puerto Rico’s Bootstrap Paradox” receiving a Leaf Award in Performing Arts. While in Germany, Rafael intends to continue researching in the field of Political Science, focusing on analysis of climate and immigration policy.
Emma Gebhard

Emma Gebhard graduated in 2023 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in German. For the past two years, Emma has been working at Sheppard Pratt as a residential rehabilitation specialist. In additional to her role at Sheppard Pratt, Emma has served as a board member on the German American Cultural Center of Maryland. In the future, Emma hopes to pursue a master’s degree in social work. While in Germany, Emma is excited to immerse herself in German culture, build on her language skills, and gain professional experience.
Paige Cushman

Paige is a recent graduate of the University of Michigan’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a minor in Native American Studies. Throughout her time at Michigan, Paige has gained invaluable experience and knowledge that she looks forward to furthering during her time in Germany, a global hub for business. Paige’s academic and professional journey has allowed her to gain valuable experience in the Finance industry. She previously worked as a financial analyst in New York City and will resume this role upon her return from Germany in Tampa, FL. Paige is excited to expand on her knowledge of the German language and be immersed within German culture!
Peter Fitzgerald

Peter will be going to Germany in July to start the Congress-Bundestag Exchange. Peter spent the past year working in Congressman Dan Kildee’s Washington DC office as an Intern and then was hired fulltime as a Staff Assistant. Peter hopes to learn German, find an internship, and travel extensively within Germany during his time abroad.
Mario Sangret-Savalle

Professional Field: Music Performance
Mario Sangret-Savalle is a Michigan native and recent Central Michigan University graduate, with a Bachelor of Music in Voice. Currently, he is working in the Mid-Michigan area as both a performer and voice teacher. Mario is moved by the sense of connection and community making and experiencing music can bring and is looking forward to forging this kind of connection while in Germany. Outside of his musical work, Mario loves to cook and bake, and has found that there is nothing better than to share special moments with his friends around a full table. New experiences and adventures are something he cannot wait to have during his year abroad!

Lauren graduated this spring from the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management with degrees in Marketing, International Business, and a minor in History. She looks forward to learning more about German language and culture through this program that will boost her future career.
Isaac DeBilzan

Professional Field: Automotive Technician
A recent graduate from Hennepin Technical College with a degree in automotive technology, Isaac DeBilzan is now studying at Minnesota State University Moorhead to obtain a bachelor’s degree in operations management. Isaac’s strong interest in German automotive manufacturers, along with his seven years of German language experience, led him to the CBYX-YP program. During the exchange, Isaac is excited to experience German culture firsthand and create valuable friendships at work, school, and his community, while also acquiring as much knowledge as possible. His long-term goal is to establish his own auto repair business.

Warren Barge
Most Recent Educational Institution: Truman State University
Professional Field: Public Policy
Warren Barge is currently a Collegiate Associate for the Manhattan Institute, a think-tank located in New York City. Warren recently graduated from Truman State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Political Science. During his undergraduate career Warren interned for the American Institute for Economic Research, served on Capitol Hill with Congressman Sam Graves, and became a researcher for the America First Policy Institute. His work on non-compete agreements has been recognized by the Hoover Institute, a research institute located at Stanford University. Warren hopes to learn more about German history and politics during his time in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals program.
Jackson “Hans” Estwanick
Most Recent Educational Institution: University of Missouri-Columbia
Professional Field: Marketing/Advertising Strategy
Jackson “Hans” Estwanick graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Missouri in May, 2024 with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Journalism, having studied German and Strategic Communications respectively. He was also a member of the Honors College. Jackson combined his two courses of study to form a unique professional identity: a marketing researcher and strategist fluent in English and German. His skill set has already allowed him to accumulate a wealth of professional experiences, including the promotion of large concerts and speaking events, creating a digital archive for adaptations of Franz Kafka’s works, and writing articles for the largest VA loan lender in the country. Outside of work and school, Jackson enjoys writing, as well as training in kickboxing and jiu jitsu. In his year as a member of the 41st CBYX-YP Cohort, he looks forward to returning to Germany for a third time. He will focus on solidifying his language abilities in a professional capacity, learning more about advertising in a European context, and drinking Fritz Kola.
Kate Schreiber

Kate Schreiber is from St. Louis, Missouri and currently a third-year at the University of Missouri Columbia, majoring in Journalism and German Language & Culture. At school, Kate serves as a Research Assistant in the German department and is a DJ for student-run radio station KCOU. Through her participation in CBYX, Kate is looking forward to improving her German language skills and gaining experience as an intern in a newsroom setting, particularly with an emphasis in radio and audio-reporting. After her year in Germany, Kate will return to the University of Missouri to finish her Bachelor’s degrees in German and Journalism.
Alejandro Rios

Professional Field: Political Science
Alejandro is attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he has been working towards obtaining a degree in political science and a minor in German. He also works at UNLV’s Intersection and Undocumented Student Program where he helps students at the university succeed. He hopes to work in helping his community in the future through non-profits and grassroots organizations. In Germany, Alejandro wants to observe how these types of organization differ from their counterparts in the United States, as well as other local community aspects in Germany.

Aaron Ullman is a recent graduate of Columbia University with a B.A. in Chemistry. As an undergraduate Aaron participated in various research experiences most recently with Professor Minkui Luo at Memorial Sloan Kettering where he synthesized potential cancer drugs. In Germany, Aaron hopes to continue to improve his organic chemistry skills by working in one of Germany’s famed research institutes. In the future, Aaron hopes to pursue a PhD in Chemistry.

Emma Schulman

Emma Schulman, a recent 2024 graduate from Williams College, is currently embarking on a year long fellowship in Germany. Ms. Schulman received the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) fellowship and hopes to specifically learn more about the German criminal justice system. During her summers as an undergraduate, Ms. Schulman interned at the New Hampshire Public Defender and the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, gaining important experience working in the United State’s criminal justice system. She was also heavily committed to understanding and supporting the criminal justice system in the Berkshires– she tutored at the Berkshire House of Corrections, conducted research and made a website regarding successful hiring and management practices of formerly incarcerated individuals, and worked closely with several reentry organizations. Outside of her work within the criminal justice system, Ms. Schulman enjoys road biking, hiking, and swimming, as she was captain of the swim and dive team at Williams.
Valerie Chlafer

Valerie recently graduated from Baruch College, where she studied public affairs with a minor in economics. During her time in university, she represented undergraduate students on her school’s strategic planning committee and supported non-native English speakers as part of the Conversation Partners Program. In her free time, Valerie volunteers as an English teacher for immigrants and is involved in political organizing around student and labor issues. She has previously interned at the Consulate General of Canada in New York, been a research assistant at the Wilson Center, and served as an AmeriCorps Summer Associate. Valerie is an aspiring Foreign Service Officer and especially interested in technology policy, democracy-building, and cultural diplomacy. She will continue pursuing these interests in Germany by interning at a tech policy start-up and volunteering with immigrant/refugee populations. After CBYX, Valerie will begin a master’s in international relations at Johns Hopkins University.
Hadassah Grimaldi

Hadassah Grimaldi is a current Computer Engineering student at SUNY New Paltz. She is passionate about applying her engineering skills towards working with and for people with disabilities. This past semester, as part of an assistive technology internship, Hadassah held drop-in hours for students to gain information and guidance on assistive technologies and created a comprehensive document of low-cost assistive technologies. In the months before participating in CBYX, Hadassah will be developing campus accessibility maps as part of the RIDE REU program at UMass Amherst. Hadassah is looking forward to gaining an understanding of assistive technology in Germany as well as cultivating cultural understanding.
Kevin Luo

Kevin Luo recently graduated from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked on Cooper’s first electric racecar for the Formula SAE competition and led Cooper’s first ever entry into the AIAA Design Build Fly competition with a full carbon fiber plane. A natural problem solver, he filed a provisional patent for an innovative device that assists users in self-administering eye drops. Kevin will utilize his time through CBYX to experience German engineering by pursuing an internship in the automotive industry.

Daniel Akhnoukh is a rising sophomore at East Carolina University studying Electrical Engineering and German Studies. His family are proud Pirates, with two other family members having graduated from the university, as well as his father being a professor at the university. He has lived in the city of Greenville for seven years and calls the town home.

Erika Pascual is a native of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands—a U.S. commonwealth located in the Marianas Pacific—where she alludes to growing up in a melting pot of cultures having an influence on her passions centered around diversity and communities. During her time in Germany, she hopes to pursue an internship within the diplomatic field and learn more about human rights to find solutions concerning humanitarian aid and develop strategies in enhancing life quality in international and global affairs. She also intends on continuing her deep passion for expanding her worldliness and gaining cross-cultural perspectives through immersing in diverse cultures, connecting with people from various walks of life, and furthering her acquisition of the German language as an enthusiastic polyglot. Alanna Howe recently finished her second year at the University of Pittsburgh studying mechanical engineering. She is working at Honda as a Market Quality Engineering Intern. Alanna began learning German in eighth grade and looks forward to expanding her grasp of the language by immersing herself in it. She also interned at the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs and was an Annenberg Fellow at the Council of American Ambassadors. Katharine Boyle is a recent graduate of Montgomery County Community College where she majored in Baking and Pastry Arts. During her time in school, she learned how to make desserts native to many different countries from around the world, and Germany was one of her favorites. She is currently working for a fine dining restaurant not far from her home in the suburbs of Philadelphia as one of their pastry cooks, producing a wide variety of baked goods and pastries for all occasions. She intends on finding an internship in her field during her time in Germany to further enhance her career and gain more experience in their cuisine, and looks forward to immersing herself in their culture as well.
Ricarda Hill

Ricarda Hill graduated from Oberlin College in 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in German. Raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she has been interested in the intersection between human health and environmental science since childhood and worked for the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and the Student Conservation Association during high school. Selected as a 2022 NOAA Hollings Scholar, Ricarda spent last summer in La Jolla, California studying the distribution and diet patterns of flatback sea turtles using stable isotope analysis and has presented her work at multiple scientific conferences. She was previously a research intern in a microbiology lab at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Ricarda is eager to combine her academic and extracurricular interests in Germany next year, having worked in the German Department as a Program Assistant running the daily language conversation tables and as a peer tutor and a research assistant in the Biology Department at Oberlin. She also participated in the Fall 2023 Oberlin-in-London program, which further ignited her desire to study and explore career opportunities abroad. Ricarda is delighted and honored to participate in the 41st CBYX cohort and is especially excited to learn about environmental sustainability and public health in Germany.
Elana Caparco

Elana Caparco is a Research Specialist at Jackson Steven’s Global. She also serves as the National Director of International Partnerships for Leading Women of Tomorrow, a nonpartisan organization that promotes public service and foreign affairs careers for gender minorities. As a Horatio Alger National Scholar, Elana holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies with concentrations in Environmental Sustainability and Global Health (ESGH) and Justice Ethics Human Rights (JEHR) from the American University (AU) School of International Service (SIS). She graduated in December 2023 with certifications in Community-Based Research from the School of Public Affairs (SPA) and Peace Corps Prep. Her education also includes experiences at the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy as a Public Policy International Affairs (PPIA) Fellow and at the Danish Institute of Study Abroad (DIS) in Copenhagen. Elana has a background in legislative affairs, transatlantic economic relations, cybersecurity, US-German relations, and US foreign policy through the Bipartisan Policy Center, Office of US Senator Reed, Office of US Congressman Langevin, Rhode Island State Government, Atlantic Council Europe Center, and the US Department of State Diplomacy Lab. In leadership positions, Elana has served with AU’s Peer-Assisted Student Support International Economics Program, Teach for America Ignite Fellowship, SIS Mentoring Program, AU PRIDE, Capitol Hill Village, and Women’s Fund for Rhode Island. Maddox Morrison

Maddox Is originally from Fort Mill, South Carolina, just south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Maddox recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Physics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University while concurrently working toward his master’s in engineering physics. His research focus will be on flight dynamics and control. Maddox will take a yearlong leave of absence from the accelerated master’s program to participate in Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange program (CBYX). During his tenure at ERAU, Maddox was one of the founding members of the German Club, serving as the treasurer and secretary. Aligning with his passion for education and outreach, Maddox volunteered with the ERAU Honors Program to teach and inspire younger students at a weekly after school STEAM camp, providing children with enriching experiences to spark their interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

Erin Nugent recently wrapped up studying Business Administration and Supply Chain at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the Core Honors Program. During her time at Marquette, she had the opportunity to participate in a supply chain co-op at Harley-Davidson Motor Company where she was offered a full-time role upon completion. Most recently she has been working at ASICS America Corporation as a Sportstyle Demand Planning Analyst where she will work until she leaves for Germany. She is interested in studying sustainable supply chain and circular economy practices during her time in Germany. Erin is incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to immerse herself in German culture through the CBYX program.
Jordan Phillips

Jordan is a proud South Dakotan and Duke University student who is passionate about post-conflict reconciliation and the role the United States can play in facilitating these processes. She is also curious about international relations, diplomacy, and politics around the world, all of which drew her to participate in CBYX. Outside of the classroom, Jordan is an avid college basketball fan, a spirited sewist, and a not-so-gifted rollerblader. After CBYX, Jordan plans to return to Duke to complete her degree before attending law school.
Emmaline Howard

Emmaline went to High School at Hardin Valley Academy where she participated on the robotics team all four years. Through the FIRST program she gained an interest for engineering and teamwork. With that interest she studied Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Tennessee. While in her studies she spent all four years working in the research groups of both Prof. Gobet Advincula and Prof. David Harper. She has co-authored one paper and presented her work at SPE ANTEC (2024). She has also presented her research at EURēCA, including a poster titled, “Worms, You Need ‘Em We Got ‘Em”, on the development of non-toxic, biodegradable fishing lures (2023). In the 2024 EURēCA competition, Emmaline received an Award of Merit for her presentation. Emmaline was the 2024 recipient of the Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher award from the MSE department at UT.
Simone Lee

Simone Lee graduated from Cornell University in 2022 with a B.S. in Human Biology, Health, and Society. Since then, she completed a two-year research fellowship through the National Institutes of Health and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, focusing on patients with a rare lung disease. During her fellowship, Simone published scientific papers on rare diseases as well as COVID-19. While in Germany, she hopes to learn more about their universal healthcare system and public health programs through CBYX. Following this, she plans to attend medical school and hopes to incorporate her insights from Germany into improving the U.S. healthcare system and providing equitable care for all, especially those in underserved communities.

Natalie Swanda

Natalie Swanda (21) was born and raised in the greater Seattle area. She recently graduated from the University of Washington, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Classics. Eager to expand her horizons, Natalie is currently participating in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange, a prestigious program where she hopes to enhance her German language skills, deepen her understanding of German culture, and explore cutting-edge research in pediatric pain psychology. Natalie’s passion for pediatric care was ignited while interning at Seattle Children’s Hospital, where she gained invaluable hands-on experience. She is hopeful that these experiences will prove instrumental as she looks forward to working with Dr. Julia Wagner at the PedScience Research Institute in Datteln, Germany. Together, they aim to make significant strides in the fields of pediatric pain and palliative care. During her time in Germany, Natalie will also be taking classes at a local German university to further expand her psychology knowledge. She is excited about the opportunity to immerse herself in a new academic environment and gain diverse perspectives in her field. Most of all, Natalie looks forward to making meaningful connections in Germany, both personally and professionally, which she is sure will last a lifetime.

Riley Coburn

Originally from the small town of Upton, WY, Riley Coburn is an energetic 23-year-old woman who spends her free time enjoying the outdoors, playing games/sports, making art, traveling, and trying new things. In 2022, she graduated cum laude from the University of Wyoming with a B.A. in International Studies with a global concentration in Europe/Former Soviet Union and a focus on social/cultural issues. During all four years of her undergraduate, Riley was a dedicated player for her university’s Rugby Club and she took an active role volunteering around her community. In the Spring of 2022, she studied abroad at Sciences PO in Strasbourg, France, where she earned the Certificate in European Studies and graduated from the program summa cum laude. After completing her degree and certificate, she moved to Washington D.C. to work on Capitol Hill for her home state’s Senator, John Barrasso, as a Staff Assistant and Tour Coordinator. In working for the Chair of the Senate Republican Conference and member of the Foreign Relations Committee, she gained valuable insight on the multi-sector intricacies of legislation and development processes. Her journey from the rugged lifestyle of Wyoming to the cosmopolitan environments of France and D.C. was a trajectory of personal growth and prepared her to embrace a new challenge. It has shown her that she wants to continue fostering intercultural relations by leveraging her experiences to promote the CBYX mission in Germany. As a Cultural Ambassador, Riley hopes to contribute to the strengthening of German-American connections by laying the foundations for mutual understanding, contact across cultural borders, and a commitment to peaceful co-existence. Upon her return, she intends on enrolling in the German and European Studies Master’s Program at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service.
