We at Cultural Vistas talk about the numerous benefits international teachers can bring to American schools and students, but what do our school partners have to say? How does it impact the classroom, community, and learning?
According to our 2024-2025 supervisor evaluations, 91% say the program is ‘Extremely’ or ‘Very Beneficial’! That is overwhelming evidence that the program works. Let’s dig into the details of what they value most and why.
Creates a more dynamic and international workplace (99%)
The presence of international teachers can enrich the school in multiple ways. Don’t take our word for it, though. Here’s what one school partner had to say about a J-1 teacher they hosted:
She also brings a wonderful cultural perspective to the staff she works with, constantly sharing ideas and fostering collaboration. Her insights enrich her team and school with an understanding of diverse cultures, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and inspired to grow. She is a culture changer!”
Enhances student learning by bringing a global perspective to the classroom (98%)
Students, staff, and families are able to connect on a different level. They are learning more about different perspectives and cultures through this program.”
Not only do students absorb cultural knowledge in their everyday interactions, but teachers are also required to plan specific activities to help the students learn more about the country they are from and find ways for them to interact with students abroad. Teachers can also start new language courses or clubs that would not have otherwise existed.
Encourages new approaches and exchange of ideas for staff and administration (92%)
While many aspects of schools and students are similar across cultures, key differences also appear during the program. Teachers are very interested in comparing and sharing approaches and strategies, and will often conduct cross-cultural conversations with staff and teachers back home.
One supervisor wrote of these new approaches:
The program participant has brought a valuable perspective on teaching special education and has shared many techniques and ideas.”
J-1 Teachers are overall high performers
Nearly 54% of supervisors said their teachers ‘Exceed expectations,‘ with another 35% ‘Meeting expectations.‘ Though many teachers face a steep learning curve in adjusting to the U.S. classroom, they come ready to learn and dedicate themselves to your school and students, with 89% at least meeting their supervisors’ expectations.
We get access to amazing teachers who are highly competent, love our community, and generally make our school a better place.”
