Global Calling: A Love Letter to the World We’re Building Together

In this Global Calling series, I’m usually in conversation with one individual, a colleague, policy leader, or changemaker whose work sheds light on the power of international education. These conversations offer insight into how global experiences shape leadership and strengthen communities.

But this month was different.

Instead of a single voice, dozens came forward.

Alumni from Atlanta to Argentina, Tonga to Tanzania, and Vietnam to South Africa shared their reflections on their Cultural Vistas experience. Reading them together felt like listening to a global chorus. Their words were not isolated stories but interconnected threads of a shared message about connection, courage, and global responsibility.

And so, rather than spotlight one story, I want to honor the many.

Pooven Naiker from South Africa  captured it perfectly when she wrote that in a world full of division and digital noise, Cultural Vistas offered:

a vital antidote through deliberate, structured dialogue that breaks down stereotypes and builds shared understanding.

Anastasia Siapo from Fiji expressed gratitude to our supporters for:

building the bridge,”

and spoke of their readiness to walk across it, carrying with them every relationship formed, every lesson learned, and every possibility awakened by stepping outside their comfort zone.

One alum from the United States, Aishwarya Gawade, now working in the field of education herself, reflected:

Cultural Vistas helped me become who I am today by giving me responsibility, mentorship, and a global network.”

Ricardo Vanella from Argentina told us that:

Standing among emerging leaders from every continent revealed that exchanges are “not just educational experiences but catalysts for collective transformation,” a realization that sparked his mission to ensure their impact reaches far beyond those who travel.

And again and again, across continents and generations, the same core truths emerged:

This experience made me a better leader.”
This community made me braver.”
This opportunity changed my life.”

Evidence of a World We Are Still Choosing to Build

These reflections aren’t simply thank-you notes.
They are evidence of the world we long for, one grounded in dignity, curiosity, and shared humanity.

They remind us that global understanding doesn’t emerge from policies or rhetoric alone. It emerges from encounters:

Every alum who wrote to us this month described a shift, not just in what they know, but in who they understand themselves to be.

They talked about the courage to ask better questions; the humility to hold complexity without shutting down; and the responsibility they now feel to lift others.

These are the qualities the world desperately needs.   And they are the qualities nurtured through exchange.

Why These Stories Matter Now

The international education landscape is full of uncertainty from policy shifts, geopolitical tensions, to structural constraints that make our work both more challenging and more essential.

But these alumni stories reminded me of something steady and hopeful.  Whether they were writing from a rural village, a bustling capital city, a startup hub, or a university research lab, each alum pointed to the same transformational moment, their realization that they were part of something bigger than themselves.

That realization is the quiet engine of global progress.

And it is the heart of Cultural Vistas.

Today is Giving Tuesday in the United States.  It is a day dedicated to supporting the activities and institutions that help make our societies stronger. But the spirit behind it is universal, and you don’t need to be American to take part.

If these voices moved you, I invite you to help fuel this engine of global leadership and understanding. Every gift, of any size, powers the next exchange, the next act of courage, the next leader who chooses connection over division. Together, we can keep this chorus growing and keep building the world they are calling us to create.
