Cultural Vistas has partnered with ACCEL Schools—an Ohio-based charter school network—since 2022, supporting classrooms with talented international educators through the J‑1 Teach Program. Today, 56 Cultural Vistas teachers serve across 30 ACCEL schools, teaching core subjects like math and history while also acting as cultural ambassadors who share perspectives from their home countries. Over the years, educators from ten countries have contributed to this vibrant exchange. To highlight the program’s impact on students, staff, and school communities, we interviewed ACCEL’s HR point of contact, a school principal, and a participating teacher.

It goes beyond academics; it really enriches the whole school environment.” -Sara Shuster, ACCEL Senior Manager, Talent Aquisition
ACCEL Schools initially participated in the J-1 Teach Program to address staffing needs while also enhancing our students’ educational experience. We recognized an opportunity not only to bring in highly qualified educators but also to expose our students to diverse perspectives, teaching styles, and global experiences that enrich the classroom beyond traditional instruction.
There have been many highlights since bringing the J-1 Program to ACCEL, but one of the biggest is the impact J-1 teachers have on student engagement. They bring a lot of energy, creativity, and dedication into the classroom. We’ve also seen them really become part of the school community—whether that’s leading activities, building strong relationships with students, or even sharing parts of their culture in meaningful ways.
The value of the J-1 Program became clear through both student outcomes and school culture. J-1 teachers consistently demonstrate strong work ethics, adaptability, and commitment to their students. Beyond filling vacancies, they elevate the learning environment.
As we saw positive results in individual schools—both academically and culturally—it made sense to expand the program across the district to ensure more students could benefit from these experiences.”
J-1 teachers bring a global perspective naturally, just through who they are and their experiences.
Students get to learn about different countries, traditions, and viewpoints in a very real, personal way.”
It helps students become more open-minded and curious, and it creates a culture where differences are valued and celebrated.
The J-1 program aligns closely with ACCEL Schools’ mission to provide high-quality, student-centered education while preparing students for success in a diverse and interconnected world. By bringing in international educators, we are not only strengthening instruction but also reinforcing our commitment to global readiness—a key component of our long-term goals.
Cultural Vistas’ support has been huge. They’re very responsive, they communicate well, and they understand what schools need. From recruitment through ongoing support, they help make what could be a complicated process feel much more manageable.
We would recommend the J-1 TEACH program because it offers a meaningful solution to staffing challenges while also enhancing students’ educational experience.
It’s not just about filling positions—it’s about adding value to your schools.”
Leaders who are open to investing in support and integration will find that J-1 teachers can make a lasting positive impact on both students and school culture.
Operationally, schools should be prepared to provide structured onboarding, clear expectations, and ongoing support—especially in areas like curriculum alignment, classroom management expectations, and compliance requirements. Culturally, it’s important to recognize that J-1 teachers are adjusting not only to a new school, but also to a new country. Schools that are intentional about mentorship, peer support, and community integration see the greatest success.
Best practices include:
- Assigning a dedicated mentor or point of contact
- Providing regular check-ins and feedback
Offering support with housing, transportation, and daily logistics when possible- Creating opportunities for cultural exchange within the school community
When schools are proactive and supportive, J-1 teachers thrive—and in turn, so do students.”
