Validation – Activate Your Visa
One of the first and most important post-arrival tasks is completing validation so the participant’s program can be properly activated in SEVIS. This resource explains what validation means, why it matters, and what steps participants need to take after arriving in the United States. Complete this step within 5 days of arrival!
The I-94 is an important record of entry into the United States and may be needed for tasks such as applying for a Social Security number or confirming immigration status. This guide explains what the I-94 is, how to access it online, and why participants should review it carefully. You must carry a printout of this with you at all times in the U.S.!
Participants who plan to travel internationally during their program should understand the approval process before leaving the United States. This resource outlines required documentation, how to request travel validation, and how to avoid common issues when re-entering the U.S.
Some participants may be eligible to extend their program, depending on their category and circumstances. The extension chart below should remain in place as the detailed reference for eligibility, maximum length, application process, and cost.
Extension Application Requirements by Category
Extension instructions differ by J-1 category. Participants should review the requirements carefully and follow the process that applies to their program category. All extension requests must be completed before the current program end date, and participants should allow enough time for review and processing.
Note: Extension applications and requested items should be submitted at least 10 business days before the original program end date, or an additional late fee of $750 will apply.

Participants in these categories should contact their Cultural Vistas representative or Visa Specialist to request extension instructions. The extension application should be completed by both the host organization representative and the J-1 participant and should clearly explain the participant’s current work, continued role, and planned activities during the extension period.
Intern and Trainee participants should complete the extension process through the online Community/Salesforce application. Both the participant and host company must complete their required portions of the extension application. The extension request should show how the next phase of the training or internship will build on the original program and provide continued or advanced learning. Midterm program evaluations by both the participant and supervisor will also need to be completed prior to an extension approval.
Visa Appointments & Renewals
Travel plans and visa expiration dates can sometimes raise questions about whether a new visa appointment is needed. This resource offers guidance on visa renewals, appointments abroad, and important considerations to keep in mind before making travel decisions.
Note: If your DS-2019 is still valid and the visa in your passport has expired, you may continue participating in the program and remain in the U.S. until the end date printed on the DS-2019. You only need to obtain a new visa if you travel abroad.
Dependents
If your spouse or children will join you in the United States as J-2 dependents, it’s helpful to understand the additional planning involved. This resource covers key considerations related to documentation, status, and other important details for participants traveling with family.
