2022 YSEALI Regional Workshop

on Embracing Diversity and Inclusion

The U.S. Embassy in Malaysia, in partnership with Cultural Vistas, will host the 2022 YSEALI Regional Workshop on Embracing Diversity and Inclusion, DIY: Diversity, Inclusion, Youth. The program will include young leaders from the 10 ASEAN member nations and Timor-Leste who express commitment to advocating for diversity and inclusion issues in their workplaces, communities, and in Southeast Asia. This fully-funded program will consist of pre-workshop virtual activities providing background on diversity and inclusion frameworks as well as introduction to best practices of implementing diversity initiatives; a three-day workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and post-workshop activities demonstrating lessons learned by multinational teams and as individuals.

Application and Eligibility

All applicants must be 18-35 years old, be fluent in written and spoken English, be registered members of YSEALI, and be citizens of one of the following countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Vietnam. If you are a citizen of one of the listed countries but living outside of Southeast Asia, you may apply for the workshop and join the virtual program. However, flights for the in-person workshop will only be covered for participants currently residing in Southeast Asia. Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate an interest in, and commitments to, diversity and inclusion practices in their local community or nation.

Topics and Themes

    • Developing Intercultural Mindset
      The DIY Workshop will guide participants in developing the skills and strategies necessary to work effectively on diverse teams. Participants will build capacity in global competencies to examine local, global, and intercultural issues from various perspectives and world views. The goal of the workshop is for participants identify ways to engage in open, appropriate, and effective interactions with people from different cultures to act for collective well-being.
    • Nurturing Practical Application
      In building the global mindset, the DIY Workshop will additionally help participants develop approaches in channeling an intercultural mindset into positive civic engagement to build trust in diverse communities. Participants will work to address diversity and inclusion challenges in workplace environments, as well as those that exist within ASEAN and Timor-Leste communities. Participants will be introduced to case studies of how different regional organizations have used needs assessments to adopt diversity and inclusion practices. Multinational teams of participants will then build their own business cases and needs assessment models they can apply within their own workplace or community.

How do you evaluate applications?

  • Projects will be evaluated by Cultural Vistas staff in conjunction with the U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur staff and sent to other U.S. Embassies in the YSEALI region for final review and selection.

When will I know if I was selected?

  • We will make selection announcement in June 2022. You will be informed via email if you were selected or not. ​
